This skirt below was what I hoped it would be, but it came out a bit different.
You need fabric (I used 1/2 a metre, it was plenty, but it really depends on your size, and how long you want it to be, and how much you want it to gather at the top)
and elastic (the thicker, the more puffy)
Oh and a sewing machine. I guess you could do it by hand but that would take a veeery long time.
Anyway...
1. Cut all the edges straight, if they aren't already. Mine was really wonkily cut, so i had to trim it into shape.
2. Fold the fabric in half, so that the two shortest sides are open, like a book.
3. Sew along the open side, so that it's like a tube.
4. Fold over the edge of the skirt you want to be the top (so that it's neat), and then fold it over again so that it's a little wider than the elastic that you want to thread through it. The wider the elastic you chose, the wider the waistband
5. Pin along that edge and sew it down. Cut a slit on the inside waistband so you can put the elastic through.
6. Measure your waist, and then cut the elastic to size with an inch or so extra for the overlap
7. Then, using a hairgrip or safety pin on one end of the elastic, thread it through the slit and round the skirt. Then just sew the two ends together when they meet, and sew the slit closed.
8. Then hem the bottom as short as you want it. You can fold or cut the skirt to the length you want it, but I just folded it so that I can take it down just in case.
Yay!
All done!
Skirts are supposed to be a beginners thing, they're nice and quick to make. but of coursse I had a disaster, I couldn't work the machine properly and had to unpick like a metre of stitches gone wrong. Fun stuff.
