future diy? patch shorts

I LOVE THESE SHORTS! Really want to add one of these to my denim shorts that I cut at the weekend (gotta love turning horrible £3.50 jeans into decent shorts!). Not completely sure how I'm going to set about doing this, fabric paint probably, I think they're really cool, and I haven't really DIY-ed anything in ages, so this should be a good waste of an hour at the weekend! Have you got any things you're going to DIY?
